Do Kids really need Full Suspension Bikes for Downhill Riding?

Hardtail vs Full Suspension – What is the Future for the Next Generation of Downhill riders?
by Steven Meek

Old-school hardtail riders and parents of the new generation of downhill mountain bike riders stand at opposite ends of the debate over full suspension downhill mountain bikes for children. In this blog discussion, we outline why full suspension children’s bikes are the future for downhill mountain biking.

Crankworx Whistler 2017

Turning Heads in Whistler

This summer we were able to spend three sick weeks in Whistler riding at the Bike Park. Both Toby and Rory moved up into new race categories and became the youngest in their groups. Toby was especially stoked as although he is 12, his birthday is December 27th which meant he could race in the 13-15 year youth category for Crankworx. He made Top 10 finishes in Garbanzo and the Air DH and he came twelfth in the Canadian Open.

Exciting Results at the US Open MTB

What a rad weekend at the US Open MTB at Mountain Creek Bike Park, Vernon, New Jersey. Rory was crowned No.1 for 12 year and Under in the Super Grom race. Toby, 12,  came 4th in the 14 year and under race on the pro DH track. He also made it to the finals of the whip-off contest with the big Huns like Tyler McCaul. A great event organised by a Clay Harper.

Chiang Mai MTB Training Centre Project

A New Riding Vision For Chiang Mai

A rad project came to my attention earlier this year whereby a good downhill friend (Steve Gould aka Chewy) and I were approached to build a massive mountain bike training centre in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

After looking at some photos and video footage of the terrain we put our heads together and came up with a design.

In early January we flew over to Thailand and the adventure began.

Looseriders week in Thailand

A Trip to Remember

What a rad time we had meeting up with the Looseriders crew in Thailand this week. Despite a few local political hurdles to overcome with the track building, the boys have had a blast with Nico Vink, Vinny T and the crew.

Rory managed to make all of the jumps by day three so he was super stoked. His carbon 20″

Thailand BMX Open, November 2016

Podium Finishes for the MeekBoyz at the Thailand BMX Open

What a sensational race weekend in Suphan Buri we have had. Rory came first in the 9 year boy age group on Saturday and Toby came 2nd in the 12 year boy category. Racing with so many nationalities across Asia was awesome and the Thai people and BMX clubs were such welcoming hosts.

Sunday racing provided more podium finishes for the boys with both taking 3rd place.

Crankworx Whistler 2016

The MeekBoyz Take on Crankworx Whistler

The lads had a blast at their first Crankworx this year. Prior to race week, they trained on the new trails with Dad, Chewy and Brian and had a few great runs down the slopes with the pros Mick Hannah and Team Polygon, Cedric Gracia, Sam Blenkinsop, Brook MacDonald and kid-legend Jackson Goldstone. The Whistler trails are a dream for downhill mountain bike riders.

Toby smashed the revamped Crab Apple Hits,

2016 World BMX Championships Colombia

Thrilling Racing at the 2016 BMX Championships

What a blast we had BMX racing in Colombia! A thrilling event right under the flight path of the commercial jets coming into land. Exciting racing with a great track, more technical than the last three world champs.

We experienced fantastic training tracks all around Medellin and hospitable local riders to share the experience with. An adventure we will never forget. Rory ranking W11 in 9-year boys and Toby W33 in 12-year boys.

DH riding in Queenstown, New Zealand

Welcome to the Meekboyz blog!

We recently spent a week riding our custom downhill MeekBoyz 20″ and 24″ bikes on the trails of Skyline Gondola in Queenstown, New Zealand. Epic new trails and jumps to test. If you haven’t been there yet, it’s a must! Gorge Road Jump Park is also a sick spot to get some airtime and Wynyards Park if you want some big DH jumps.
